Next Gen Nurse Practitioner Services (“we”, “us”, “our”) values the trust you place in us as your healthcare provider. Protecting your privacy is fundamental to the nurse practitioner–patient relationship.

We are committed to handling your personal and health information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 , the Australian Privacy Principles , and the My Health Records Act 2012.

2. Nurse Practitioner–led care

This practice is led by an Endorsed Nurse Practitioner, authorised under Australian law to independently assess, diagnose, treat, and manage health conditions; prescribe medications; order and interpret investigations; and refer patients to other healthcare providers.

Personal and health information is collected and used to support these functions within the Nurse Practitioner’s scope of practice and professional obligations.

3. What information we collect

We collect only the information necessary to provide safe and effective healthcare.

Personal information

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address

Health and sensitive information

  • Medical history and clinical notes
  • Medicare number, Individual Reference Number (IRN), and expiry date
  • Prescriptions and treatment records
  • Pathology and diagnostic imaging results
  • Referral information
  • My Health Record information (with consent)

Health information is considered sensitive information and is afforded a higher level of protection.

  • Directly from you during consultations

  • From My Health Record (with your consent)
  • From referrals or reports provided by other healthcare professionals

  • Prescribe medications
  • Request pathology and diagnostic imaging
  • Make referrals and coordinate care
  • Access and update My Health Record (with consent)
  • Bill Medicare and meet administrative requirements
  • Comply with legal, regulatory, and professional obligations

6. Use and disclosure of information

Your information is used and disclosed only when necessary to provide healthcare or as required by law.

Information may be shared with:

  • Other healthcare providers involved in your care (e.g. GPs, specialists, allied health professionals)
  • Aged care and community care teams
  • Pathology and radiology providers
  • Medicare and other government health agencies
  • Secure clinical software and practice management providers
  • Medical indemnity and professional defence organisations
  • Regulatory authorities where required by law

We do not sell or rent personal information.

7. Collaborative and shared care (including professional mentors)

As part of Nurse Practitioner–led primary care, including aged care, we work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to support safe, coordinated, and ongoing care. This may include general practitioners, specialists, allied health professionals, aged care teams, and professional mentors.

When consulting with professional mentors, only relevant clinical information is discussed. Personal identifying information is not shared.

Information is shared with your knowledge and consent, unless disclosure is required or permitted by law.

8. My Health Record

We will only access your My Health Record:

  • With your consent
  • For the purpose of providing healthcare services
  • In accordance with the My Health Records Act 2012

You may withdraw your consent at any time. Your care will not be affected if you choose not to participate.

9. Website use

When you visit our website, limited technical information (such as IP address and browser type) may be collected automatically for security, maintenance, and performance purposes. This information does not identify you personally and is not used for marketing.

10. Data quality

We take reasonable steps to ensure that the information we hold is accurate, complete, and up to date. Please let us know if your details change.

Requests can be made through our reception team. Access may involve a consultation appointment, and reasonable administrative fees may apply in accordance with applicable guidelines.

Records are retained and disposed of in accordance with legal requirements.

13. Use of Medicare and other identifiers

Medicare numbers and other government identifiers are collected and used only for billing, claiming, and compliance purposes. They are not used for any other purpose.

If personal information is stored or processed overseas (for example, via secure cloud-based systems), we take reasonable steps to ensure it is protected in accordance with Australian privacy laws.

In the unlikely event of a data breach likely to result in serious harm, we will comply with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, including notifying affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) where required.

16. Education and professional development

From time to time, Nurse Practitioners may be involved in education or professional development activities. Patient information is used only in a de-identified manner unless explicit consent is obtained.
